MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Three Killed and Four Critically Injured When Stolen Car Collides With Semi Near University of Minnesota
MINNEAPOLIS, MN (September 30, 2026). Three people were killed and four others suffered potentially life-threatening injuries when a stolen car carrying seven people collided with a semitrailer near Interstate 35W and the University of Minnesota early Tuesday, according to Minneapolis police.
The crash occurred at approximately 4:12 a.m. near Fourth Street Southeast in the Marcy-Holmes neighborhood, several blocks west of the university’s Minneapolis campus.
Police said the semitrailer was exiting southbound Interstate 35W and crossing Fourth Street Southeast when it collided with a Hyundai Elantra. Investigators later determined that the Hyundai had been reported stolen.
Two 15-year-old boys seated in the front of the car and a female passenger in the rear died at the scene. Authorities had not publicly released their names as of Tuesday evening.
The four surviving occupants, two 18-year-old men, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy, were transported to hospitals with injuries police described as potentially life-threatening.
The semitrailer driver was not injured.
Investigators believe the stolen car’s speed contributed to the collision. Police have not disclosed who was driving, where the vehicle was stolen or what occurred immediately before the crash.
The collision closed streets near the interstate exit while police, firefighters and emergency medical personnel worked at the scene. It also renewed concern among nearby residents about speeding and the design of an area containing interstate ramps, one-way streets, pedestrian crossings and routes heavily used by university students.
The investigation remains active. Any conclusions concerning criminal responsibility will depend on evidence gathered by police and reviewed by prosecutors.
