Plymouth Woman Makes Career Out Of Organizing

How disorganized is your home? Perhaps it’s time for a professional organizer.

A Plymouth woman has made a career out of helping people transform their homes from chaos to peaceful order.

Meet Home Organizer Valerie Ruha

Valerie Ruha loves books and has a fondness for the Nancy Drew series.

“I have the full collection,” she said. “All one through 51.”

And as much as she loves books, she loves to organize them more.

“I know where the mysteries are, I know where the fiction is,” she said.

For Ruha, putting things in order started at a young age.

“If you couldn’t find me, I’d be in my room organizing my sock drawer or my Barbies,” she said. “It just came natural to me.”

A couple years ago, Ruha took her natural gift and turned it into a career.

Leaving the marketing world she knew for 20 years, she started Very Organized by Valerie.

Ruha’s Organizing Philosophy

Ruha declutters and organizes with a judgement-free attitude.

“It’s kitchens, bedrooms, pantries, basements, closets. You name it, I do it,” she said. “I love helping people. It’s really rewarding. People that reach out to me are really needing help and so I’m there to not only help them organize but help figure out what works for them. What doesn’t work for them.”

The home organizer enjoys helping people that have just moved or are downsizing.

“There’s so much going on with baby boomers that are downsizing and going into places that they can live more comfortably, so there’s a lot of help out there that’s needed to go through all the stuff that they’ve acquired over the years,” said Ruha.

Organizing Tips

Ruha shared some tips to maximize space in kitchen cabinets.

She recommends if you don’t have adequate shelfing, to buy risers to place plates and bowls on.

“It just gives you more vertical space to use rather than it be empty,” she said.

She also recommends installing lights into deep pantries so you can see items better and putting items into bins.

“It’s a roll-out bin that attaches to the cabinet, but it’s just an easy way to pull-out and see what kinds of things you have in the back, versus having to reach way back there and pull it all out, ” Ruha said.

The ultimate goal for Ruha is helping people free their mind to give them more time to focus on what they love to do.

“It makes me feel good, makes my clients feel good, and I’m just happy to help them out,” she said.

Ruha also helps people tackle their mountains of paperwork.

She says is you only need to keep tax returns for seven years.
