Minneapolis Police Thwart Violence: Quick Intervention Leads To Arrest Of Armed Suspect
Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) had a moment of quick action last week when their Late-Night Safety Plan (LNSP) led to the disarmament and arrest of an armed suspect.
According to a social media post from MPD, officers were able to prevent an escalation in violence following an altercation that was caught on city cameras on December 14th.
The post detailed that officers had spotted a fight, and within a minute, they observed a suspect pulling a gun and using it to pistol-whip another individual.
The officers then organized a strategic plan to apprehend the suspect, which led to them safely disarming and arresting the gunman without causing further danger to the public or officers.
This swift action took place thanks to the proactive monitoring that is a central component of the LNSP.
"To our incredible officers: your bravery and dedication are driving down gun violence as every illegal gun removed from our streets is a potential shooting prevented," MPD Chief Brian O'Hara was quoted in the post.
The MPD message also underlined the importance of the LNSP's quick, decisive action to prevent violence before it has a chance to escalate—an approach that may have stopped a shooting or other serious crimes in this instance.
MPD's approach is intended to not only react to crime but also stop it in its tracks, using surveillance and strategic interventions that keep the public and officers out of harm's way.
