MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | New Coon Rapids Guest House Gives Eight Families Private Shelter Apartments

COON RAPIDS, MN (September 17, 2026). A new shelter in Coon Rapids is giving families experiencing homelessness private apartments while they work with staff toward stable housing and financial independence.

Family Promise in Anoka County opened the Guest House at 363 Coon Rapids Boulevard NW, establishing what the organization and city describe as the first shelter of its kind in Anoka County.

The facility can accommodate as many as eight families at one time. Each family receives an apartment-style unit with beds, a private bathroom and a kitchen instead of sleeping in a shared dormitory.

The building also includes laundry facilities and common spaces for family activities, workshops and support services.

Executive Director David Frei said the environment was designed so children would not feel as though they were living in an institutional shelter.

Family Promise works with participating families on housing plans and other steps toward stability. Those services can include help locating permanent housing, employment guidance, budgeting assistance and connections with community resources.

The Minnesota Department of Human Services contributed $3.6 million toward construction of the facility.

The shelter addresses a significant gap in the county’s housing system. Families experiencing homelessness can have difficulty finding placements that allow parents and children to remain together, particularly when shelters are full or designed primarily for individual adults.

The private-unit design also allows families to prepare their own meals and maintain more normal household routines while receiving assistance.
