MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 30, 2026).
Halloween has landed on a Saturday this year, which means the Twin Cities have an entire weekend to celebrate, and parents have one more reason to wonder how a costume that looked perfectly fine on Thursday suddenly needs emergency repairs by Saturday morning.
The pumpkins are out, the candy bowls are filling up, and somewhere in Minnesota, somebody has already purchased a second bag of Halloween candy after insisting the first one was strictly for trick-or-treaters. We will leave that investigation to the appropriate household authorities.
Fortunately, there is much more happening this weekend than costumes and candy.
Brooklyn Park's Zanewood Recreation Center is welcoming families for its Fall Festival. Minneapolis is preparing for the Festival de las Calaveras, the BareBones Halloween Extravaganza and a wide range of music, theater and cultural programming. Saint Paul has concerts, museum activities, markets, ballet and a LEGO convention at the State Fairgrounds. Communities across the North Metro and surrounding suburbs are offering neighborhood celebrations that make it possible to enjoy the season without traveling across the entire metropolitan area.
Sports fans have their own choices, including basketball and college hockey. Families looking for indoor activities can explore museums, shopping-center celebrations and hands-on attractions. Those interested in Día de los Muertos will find opportunities to experience cultural traditions centered on family, memory, art and community.
And then there is Sunday, when daylight saving time ends and we get an extra hour. Whether that hour becomes additional sleep, another household chore or an unusually long breakfast remains entirely between you and your alarm clock.
Welcome to another edition of This Weekend in the Twin Cities™, MinneapoliMedia's weekly invitation to explore the communities, people and experiences that make Minnesota worth discovering.
Friday, October 30: Mostly sunny, with a forecast high near 53°F.
Saturday, October 31: Cloudy, with a high near 55°F and a chance of rain estimated at approximately 50 percent.
Sunday, November 1: Partly sunny and warmer, with a forecast high near 64°F.
These are forecast figures reported for October 29 and should be checked again before traveling. Saturday's possibility of rain matters especially for outdoor Halloween activities, neighborhood trick-or-treat events and the BareBones performances.
A jacket, comfortable shoes and an umbrella are sensible additions to the weekend wardrobe. Children may have strong opinions about whether a coat belongs over a carefully assembled costume. Minnesota weather, unfortunately, does not participate in those negotiations.
Traffic, parking and transit: Expect additional activity around downtown Minneapolis and Saint Paul entertainment venues, especially Friday and Saturday evenings. Major concerts, basketball, theater performances and Halloween celebrations can increase parking demand.
Visitors heading to the Minnesota State Fairgrounds should follow the Brick Cities convention's parking directions. Those attending events at First Avenue, the Palace Theatre, the Fitzgerald Theater and other downtown venues should allow additional time for arrival.
For current information, consult:
All event times are Minnesota local time. Friday and Saturday follow Central Daylight Time. At 2 a.m. Sunday, November 1, clocks move back one hour to Central Standard Time.
Multiday attractions and repeated performances are listed as single events in the directory.

A little planning can make a big difference this weekend, especially when Halloween falls on Saturday and the weather appears determined to participate in the festivities.
Check event times and ticket availability before leaving home. Some attractions require advance reservations, others have age restrictions, and several performances offer multiple sessions with separate admission.
If you are bringing children, consider the distance between activities and the amount of walking involved. A family outing can be delightful right up until someone announces that their feet hurt, they are hungry and they no longer remember why everyone left the house.
For affordable outings, look closely at free neighborhood celebrations, library programming, public markets and community festivals. The Zanewood Fall Festival, outdoor Festival de las Calaveras activities and pay-what-you-can BareBones performances are among the options worth considering.
Saturday's weather may affect outdoor plans. Keep a backup activity in mind, especially if you are attending with young children.
If you are heading downtown, review parking and transit options before departure. Arriving early is usually more enjoyable than circling a parking ramp while everyone in the car offers a different suggestion.
And remember that clocks move back one hour early Sunday morning. Enjoy the extra hour. There is no requirement to spend it catching up on everything you did not finish Saturday.
There is something especially appealing about a weekend when so many different communities have something to share.
In Brooklyn Park, a recreation center becomes a gathering place for families. In Anoka and Coon Rapids, neighborhood celebrations give children a chance to enjoy Halloween close to home. Minneapolis artists transform a park into an outdoor theater, while Latino cultural organizations bring the traditions of Día de los Muertos into public spaces through music, art and remembrance.
Saint Paul's theaters, museums, concert venues and markets offer their own opportunities to participate. Across the suburbs, families can explore seasonal attractions, attend concerts or discover community activities they might otherwise overlook.
None of these experiences happens by accident. Behind them are artists, volunteers, recreation workers, business owners, cultural organizations and community partners who spend considerable time making public life more interesting and welcoming.
A neighborhood event may be free to attend, but it still requires people willing to organize it. A performance may last only an hour, but the work behind it can take months. A cultural celebration may look festive from the outside, yet carry generations of history and meaning for the families who participate.
That is worth remembering as we move from one activity to another.
It is also worth remembering that a successful weekend does not require attending everything on the calendar. Nobody receives a certificate for visiting seven locations before dinner, and the person who suggested that ambitious itinerary may not be especially popular by the sixth stop.
Choose a few experiences that genuinely interest you. Visit a neighborhood you have not explored. Support a local artist or small business. Invite someone who could use a little company.
The best part of a community weekend is not how many places you manage to visit. It is what you discover, whom you meet and what you carry home afterward.
And if all you carry home is a bag of candy and a good story, that counts too.
At MinneapoliMedia, we believe a good weekend should come with plenty of possibilities, a little adventure and, preferably, fewer arguments about where everyone wants to go.
This Weekend in the Twin Cities™ is our way of helping you discover the people, places, celebrations and experiences that make Minnesota's communities worth exploring. Whether your plans involve a concert, a neighborhood festival, a family outing or simply convincing everyone to leave the house before noon, we hope this guide makes the decision a little easier.
Event schedules, admission prices and ticket availability can change, sometimes faster than a Minnesota weather forecast. We encourage readers to check directly with organizers before heading out, especially for outdoor activities, advance reservations and special accessibility arrangements.
Most importantly, enjoy yourself. Support local artists, visit a neighborhood you have never explored, introduce someone to a new experience and remember that not every weekend needs an elaborate itinerary to become a good memory.
And if your carefully planned Saturday somehow turns into three unexpected stops and dinner somewhere nobody originally suggested, well, that sounds like a fairly successful weekend to us.
