Fears Over Deadly Ricin Prompt Hazmat Response To Brooklyn Park
A 54-year-old man was arrested.
Fears over the presence of the deadly substance ricin prompted a Hazmat response as authorities conducted a "high-risk" search warrant in Brooklyn Park on Thursday morning.
The Brooklyn Park Police Department's SWAT team, Minnesota National Guard and FBI were involved in the search warrant at a property on the 6400 block of Zealand Avenue North at about 5:30 a.m.
The warrant is related to an ongoing domestic violence investigation, according to police.
Authorities learned throughout the investigation that the suspect may have been in possession of castor beans, which are known to contain the deadly, naturally-occurring protein ricin.
Due to potential hazardous material concerns, assistance was requested from specific trained personnel with the FBI and the Minnesota National Guard's 55th Civil Support Team.
Several people were found inside the residence and a 54-year-old man was arrested for probable cause attempted murder.
Police say the property is secure and the hazmat situation is under control. There is no danger to the public at this time.
The investigation remains ongoing.
