The incident remains under investigation and details remain brief as of Tuesday.
A video has emerged on social media that shows Hennepin County Sheriff's deputies striking a man in the face during an arrest in south Minneapolis last month.
The video, shared on Facebook by De Sota Gurley on Monday, shows two deputies on top of a man while one of them attempts to handcuff or zip-tie his wrists. It appears the incident happened near the intersection of 22nd Avenue South and Franklin Avenue East.
As the man yells, including asking police to call his wife, the deputy nearest to the camera strikes him four times in the head area as he tries to get the cuffs on. Then, the second deputy appears to inflict a much more forceful blow to the back of the head.
A spokesperson for the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office confirmed to Bring Me The News that the incident happened on Jan. 9, 2025, and that the incident is being reviewed "to determine appropriate next steps," with the video forming part of that review.
It's not clear why it has taken until this week for the video to be uploaded to social media. Bring Me The News has reached out to Gurley for more information.
"The involved detectives reported and documented the use of force/response to resistance as required when the incident occurred," Hennepin County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Megan Larson said.
"The individual was arrested and reports were submitted for charging consideration for felon in possession of a firearm, including an extended magazine, and third degree possession of a controlled substance," officer Megan Larson said.
A witness observing the scene is heard saying "he's not resisting," with the deputies telling people to "get back" while remaining on top of the man.
BMTN has since filed a data request with the HCSO to learn more details regarding the incident and those involved.
