Twin Cities Hit By Heavy Rains, Leading To Widespread Street Flooding

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – June 26, 2025 – The Twin Cities metro area experienced significant street flooding Wednesday as a powerful storm system brought heavy rainfall, prompting flash flood warnings and disrupting commutes. While much of southern Minnesota saw reports of tornadoes, the Twin Cities bore the brunt of the torrential downpour.

Rainfall totals across the metro varied widely, with some areas receiving over 4 inches of rain by early Thursday morning. Roseville reported the highest amount within the Twin Cities, reaching 4.27 inches. Other hard-hit areas included Minnetonka with 3.25 inches, Mound with 3.58 inches, and Minneapolis recording 2.40 inches of rain. In contrast, Burnsville saw a comparatively lighter 0.81 inches.

The rapid accumulation of water quickly overwhelmed drainage systems, leading to numerous reports of stalled vehicles and impassable roads. Drivers encountered dangerous conditions, with vehicles becoming stuck in deep water, particularly near Lake Harriet and in parts of northeast Minneapolis and Golden Valley. Authorities urged residents to avoid driving through standing water, emphasizing the hidden dangers and potential for vehicle damage.

Beyond the Twin Cities, western Minnesota also saw substantial rainfall, with some locations experiencing even higher totals. Renville reported an unofficial high of 5.70 inches, leading to significant street flooding and prompting local officials to request residents to conserve water.

The severe weather on Wednesday was part of a larger system that also triggered multiple tornado warnings across southern Minnesota. While the Twin Cities largely avoided direct tornado impacts, the associated heavy rains proved disruptive.

Forecasters indicate that more rain, though expected to be lighter than Wednesday's downpour, is possible for the Twin Cities on Thursday afternoon. Drier conditions are anticipated to return by Friday, offering a much-needed reprieve from the wet weather.

Key Rainfall Totals (as of early June 26, 2025):

  • Roseville: 4.27 inches
  • Mound: 3.58 inches
  • Minnetonka: 3.25 inches
  • Centerville: 3.06 inches
  • Minneapolis: 2.40 inches
  • Coon Rapids: 1.95 inches
  • Burnsville: 0.81 inches

Residents are reminded to remain cautious on roadways and to heed any further weather advisories as the region continues to recover from the heavy rainfall.
