MINNEAPOLIS, MN – July 5, 2025 – A Fourth of July celebration in Minneapolis was tragically interrupted by a fatal shooting late Friday night, marking what appears to be the city's 26th homicide this year. The incident, which occurred in south Minneapolis, has prompted an urgent plea from police for community assistance in identifying those responsible.
At approximately 11:20 p.m. on Friday, July 4, Minneapolis firefighters were flagged down by individuals who discovered an unconscious man suffering from at least one gunshot wound in the 2700 block of Bloomington Avenue. Firefighters immediately rendered aid, performing CPR at the scene before the victim, identified as a man in his 20s, was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. His identity has not yet been released by authorities.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara expressed the department's unwavering commitment to solving the case, stating, "Someone knows what happened to this man. We need anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to share that information with us." Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting and whether it was a targeted or random act.
This fatal incident follows another shooting earlier in the day on the Fourth of July in north Minneapolis, where a man riding an electric scooter was also shot and killed. These two homicides underscore the persistent challenge of gun violence in the city, even as overall homicide rates show a notable decline compared to last year.
According to the city's crime dashboard, Minneapolis has recorded 26 homicides so far this year, a decrease from the 33 reported at the same point in 2024. This trend aligns with recent reports from city leaders, including Mayor Jacob Frey and Chief O'Hara, who have highlighted a "promising decline" in gun violence and homicides in the first quarter of 2025. They attribute this progress to a comprehensive public safety approach, combining focused law enforcement efforts, community outreach, and social services.
Despite these overall positive trends, the recent Fourth of July fatalities serve as a stark reminder of the ongoing work needed to ensure the safety of all residents. The Minneapolis Police Department is urging anyone with information related to either Fourth of July shooting to contact them by emailing policetips@minneapolismn.gov or by calling 612-673-5845 and leaving a voicemail. Tipsters wishing to remain anonymous can also contact CrimeStoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477). Information leading to an arrest and conviction may be eligible for a reward.
Authorities continue their investigations into both incidents, vowing to bring those responsible to justice.
