LAKEVILLE, Minn. — A helicopter crashed Saturday afternoon near Airlake Airport in Lakeville, killing everyone on board and triggering a multi-agency investigation led by federal aviation authorities.
The crash occurred around 2:45 p.m. on September 6, 2025, west of Highview Avenue and 219th Street West. First responders from the Lakeville Police and Fire Departments located the wreckage of a Robinson R66 helicopter in a non-residential area and confirmed there were no survivors. Officials said no one on the ground was injured, as the aircraft went down away from homes and businesses. Witnesses and initial reports indicated the helicopter burst into flames upon impact.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have opened a joint investigation into the cause of the crash. An NTSB investigator was expected to arrive Sunday to begin documenting the scene, recovering evidence, and arranging for the wreckage to be transported to a secure facility for further analysis.
At this stage, officials have not confirmed how many people were on board or what may have caused the crash. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office will release the names of the deceased once families have been notified.
Local officials stressed that the crash, while fatal, posed no danger to the surrounding community. “Our first priority was ensuring public safety and securing the site for investigators,” Lakeville authorities said in a statement.
The NTSB typically issues a preliminary report within a few weeks, providing factual details about the flight and crash circumstances, though a full investigation can take 12 to 24 months.
This is a developing story. MinneapoliMedia will provide updates as new information becomes available from investigators and local officials.
