Teen Killed In Early Sunday Morning Shooting In North Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – July 20, 2025 – A 19-year-old male was found shot and killed in north Minneapolis early Sunday morning, adding to the city's ongoing efforts to curb gun violence. Minneapolis Police are investigating the fatal incident, which occurred near the North Mississippi Regional Park.

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting near the intersection of N. Mississippi Drive and N. Lyndale Avenue shortly after 3:00 AM. Upon arrival, officers discovered the critically wounded victim. Despite immediate life-saving measures administered at the scene, the young man succumbed to his injuries. The suspected shooter had fled the area before police arrived.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara addressed the tragic event, stating, "Investigators are working diligently to gather information and learn what happened. Anyone who has information should reach out and provide that information. We are working to do everything we can to find justice for this victim and his family."

The identity of the victim is being withheld pending notification of family, with the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office expected to release his name, along with the official cause and manner of death, in the coming days.

This incident comes amidst a period where Minneapolis city leaders have highlighted a "promising decline" in gun violence during the first quarter of 2025. According to police data, the city saw 49 shootings from January 1 to March 31, a notable decrease from 70 in the same period last year and a peak of 114 in early 2022. Additionally, there had been a stretch without homicides in the city since February 15, representing the longest such period since 2017, as reported by city officials in early April.

However, the recent shooting underscores the persistent challenges Minneapolis faces in fully eradicating gun violence, particularly in neighborhoods like north Minneapolis, which have historically been disproportionately affected. Police continue to urge community cooperation in their investigations.
