Coon Rapids Commuter Alert: Highway 10 Ramp Closures Intensify as Capacity Project Advances
Coon Rapids drivers are navigating a challenging stretch of the commute as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) and Anoka County push forward with the multi-million-dollar Highway 10 “Add-a-Lane” project between Hanson Boulevard and Round Lake Boulevard. The project, which began in spring 2025, is temporarily tightening access to several key interchanges through mid-October.
Highway 10 is one of the most heavily traveled corridors in Anoka County, and congestion has increasingly spilled onto local streets in recent years. The current construction is designed to add a third through lane in each direction, resurface aging pavement, and install noise walls in nearby neighborhoods. These improvements aim to reduce traffic bottlenecks, enhance safety, and smooth the flow of traffic for daily commuters and regional travelers alike.
MnDOT officials emphasize that the temporary closures are necessary to accommodate interchange reconstruction and widening work that directly ties into the new capacity.
The following ramp closures and detours are now in effect:
In addition, the loop ramp from southbound Round Lake Blvd. to eastbound Hwy. 10—which has been closed since April following bridge damage caused by a construction vehicle—remains closed and is not expected to reopen until mid-October.
The majority of Highway 10 reconstruction is expected to be substantially complete by mid-October 2025, with all lanes and most ramps restored. However, final tasks — including a thin asphalt overlay and permanent lane striping — will extend into spring 2026, with completion scheduled before Memorial Day.
