MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Coon Rapids to Recognize Public Works Employees During National Public Works Week
COON RAPIDS, MN (May 13, 2026) The City of Coon Rapids is preparing to recognize public works employees during National Public Works Week, scheduled for May 17 through May 23, as communities across the country highlight the role infrastructure and municipal operations personnel play in daily public life.
In a public announcement shared this week, city officials thanked the men and women responsible for maintaining streets, water systems, and essential public infrastructure throughout the community.
National Public Works Week is organized annually by the American Public Works Association and is observed during the third full week of May. The 2026 national theme, “Rooted in Service, Powered by Community,” recognizes the role public works professionals play in maintaining transportation systems, drinking water infrastructure, sanitation services, stormwater management, emergency response support, and public facilities.
According to the APWA, the observance was first established in 1960 as a public education initiative designed to increase awareness of the often behind-the-scenes work performed by public works departments throughout the United States and Canada. The organization said public works employees are responsible for planning, building, operating, and maintaining infrastructure systems that support public safety, mobility, sanitation, and quality of life.
In communities such as Coon Rapids, public works operations include roadway maintenance, snow and ice removal, storm sewer systems, water distribution infrastructure, traffic operations, park maintenance support, and utility services that affect residents and businesses on a daily basis.
The APWA said this year’s theme is intended to emphasize both the visible and less visible aspects of public works operations, ranging from road and bridge maintenance to wastewater systems and emergency infrastructure response efforts.
Cities and agencies across the country are expected to mark the week with employee recognition efforts, educational outreach, equipment demonstrations, public engagement activities, and community appreciation events focused on infrastructure and municipal services.
