COON RAPIDS, MN (July 22, 2026) The Coon Rapids City Council convened Tuesday evening, July 21, for its latest regular meeting at City Hall, continuing the council’s work on appointments, municipal operations and other matters affecting the community.

The meeting began at 7 p.m. and was broadcast by the city’s Community Television Network. One matter identified in advance by the city involved selecting nominees for an opening on the Coon Creek Watershed District Board of Managers.

Council considers watershed board applicants

The city previously invited Coon Rapids residents to apply for consideration as its representative on the watershed district’s governing board. The application period closed July 16.

Applicants were asked to provide their contact information and a brief explanation of why they wanted to serve. The position requires residency in Coon Rapids.

The City Council was scheduled to consider the applicants during Tuesday’s meeting and determine which names should be forwarded to the Anoka County Board of Commissioners. The county board has final appointment authority.

What the watershed district does

The Coon Creek Watershed District manages water resources across portions of Anoka County. Its responsibilities include protecting water quality, reducing flooding, overseeing stormwater-management efforts and helping preserve streams, wetlands and other natural resources.

The district is governed by five appointed managers serving staggered three-year terms. Its board normally meets on the second and fourth Mondays of each month at the district office in Ham Lake.

Although watershed board appointments often receive less public attention than City Council elections, managers can influence policies and projects involving drainage, development, flood prevention and the long-term health of area waterways.

Regular council responsibilities

The Coon Rapids City Council consists of the mayor and six council members. It is responsible for the city budget, taxation, management of municipal property and policies carried out by the city manager and municipal departments.

Regular meetings generally include a consent agenda for routine matters, reports and recommendations from city staff, public hearings when required, council comments and an open-microphone period for Coon Rapids residents.

The council ordinarily meets at 7 p.m. on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at Coon Rapids City Hall, 11155 Robinson Drive.
