MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Coon Rapids to Host Public Works Open House Ahead of National Public Works Week
COON RAPIDS, MN (May 14, 2026) The City of Coon Rapids will host its annual Public Works Open House on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the city’s Public Works Facility, located at 1831 111th Ave. NW, as part of local recognition efforts tied to National Public Works Week.
The free community event will serve as a kickoff to National Public Works Week, which will be observed nationwide from May 17 through May 23. The annual observance is organized by the American Public Works Association to recognize the role public works professionals play in maintaining essential infrastructure and municipal services across the United States and Canada.
According to city information and promotional materials, the open house is designed to give residents a behind-the-scenes look at the equipment, personnel, and operational systems that support daily city services in Coon Rapids.
Attendees will have opportunities to view heavy municipal equipment used throughout the year for road maintenance, snow removal, emergency response support, utility work, and infrastructure operations. Equipment displays are expected to include snowplows, loaders, tractors, and other fleet vehicles used by city crews.
The city will also provide guided access to portions of the Public Works garage and operations facility, allowing residents to learn more about how municipal equipment is maintained, repaired, and deployed throughout the community.
Public works employees, including operators, engineers, utilities personnel, and maintenance staff, are expected to be on-site to answer questions and explain how city operations are managed across multiple departments.
Representatives from the city’s Recycling Center will also participate in the event by providing information regarding disposal options for electronics, appliances, and other hard-to-recycle materials commonly handled through municipal environmental services programs.
The open house will additionally coincide with several scheduled community activities.
A Garden Tool and Seed Swap event, organized as part of the city’s Community Swap Series, will take place from 10:30 a.m. to noon at the Public Works Garage. Residents will be able to exchange gently used gardening tools, seeds, and bulbs.
The city also announced that residents participating in the 2026 Tree Sale program may pick up native plants during the event hours.
The Public Works Department in Coon Rapids operates through several primary divisions responsible for maintaining core city infrastructure and services.
The Streets and Fleet Division oversees street maintenance operations, snow and ice removal, street sweeping, vehicle maintenance, and fleet management.
The Utilities Division manages drinking water treatment and distribution systems, sanitary sewer operations, and related infrastructure supporting public health and environmental compliance.
The Parks and Forestry Division maintains city parks, trails, public green spaces, and urban forestry operations throughout the community.
National Public Works Week was first established in 1960 as a public education initiative intended to increase awareness of the work performed by municipal infrastructure and operations personnel, much of which occurs outside direct public visibility despite its essential role in daily community life.
Municipal officials throughout Minnesota have increasingly emphasized the importance of workforce recruitment and long-term infrastructure investment within public works departments as cities continue confronting aging infrastructure systems, labor shortages, rising operational costs, and growing demands on transportation and utility networks.
The City of Coon Rapids said no registration is required for the open house event. Residents are encouraged to monitor official city communication channels for any schedule changes or weather-related updates.
