MINNEAPOLIS, MN (June 8, 2026) A new multi-site, grassroots exhibition tracking the global cultural legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson opened to the public on June 7, coinciding with what would have been the late musician's 68th birthday.

The People's Museum for Prince, open through June 27, 2026, bypasses traditional corporate memorabilia like platinum records or performance costumes. Instead, the three-week exhibition uses personal testimonies, fan-created artwork, oral histories, and community artifacts to document the artist's enduring societal impact nearly a decade after his 2016 passing.

International Archives and Fan Contributions

Founded and curated by Australian researcher and filmmaker E.C. Balázs, the nomadic museum features more than 70 works and personal histories submitted by contributors spanning seven countries.

Among the physical artifacts on display is the original attire worn by Australian fan Bon Matt, who was invited onto the stage during a Prince concert in Sydney after handing him a handmade rose containing a marriage proposal. The main gallery also features "Shining On," an intricate tribute portrait constructed from more than 15,000 individual beads by artist Betsy Shannon.

Historic Northside Geography

The main exhibition hub is situated at Roberts Gallery, located at 2400 Plymouth Avenue North. The venue is owned by Minneapolis artist Peyton Scott Russell, a former scenic creator for Paisley Park and Glam Slam nightclub who famously gold-leafed Prince's commemorative star outside First Avenue in 2016.

The gallery sits directly on Bernadette Anderson Way, a corridor named after the North Minneapolis matriarch who housed Prince during his formative teenage years. Local music historians note that the basement of the Anderson home served as a primary laboratory where Prince and early collaborators, including André Cymone, developed the synthesizer-heavy funk synthesis later generalized as the Minneapolis Sound.

Urban Cartography and Satellite Exhibits

In addition to the visual art pieces, the museum includes an immersive historical cartography project titled "Houses of Prince." Developed alongside Twin Cities historian Kristen Zschomler, the research installation maps the specific homes, schools, churches, and neighborhood landmarks that anchored the musician's life prior to his commercial success.

The exhibition expands past Roberts Gallery into two major satellite locations across the city:

• The Capri Theater: Located on West Broadway, this site hosts the companion exhibit "Let's Work: A Labor of Love." The venue is historically significant as the stage where Prince performed his first ticketed solo concerts in January 1979.
• South Minneapolis Partner Galleries: A secondary exhibition titled "No One in the Whole Universe Can Ever Compare" links Prince's Northside upbringing with the Southside neighborhoods that shaped his later career.

Visitor Information

The People's Museum for Prince is entirely free to the public. The main venue at Roberts Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, with viewing appointments available on Mondays and Tuesdays. Programming at the Capri Theater and adjacent partner galleries runs concurrently through the final day of the exhibition on June 27.
