Organizers say the summer session is intended to provide structured skill development for children, teenagers, and adults while offering additional opportunities for practice through public skating sessions.

Each participant receives ten lessons consisting of 30 minutes of direct instruction per week, along with practice passes that may be used during designated public skate sessions throughout the summer.

The skating school represents one of the city's longest-running recreational instructional offerings and serves as an entry point into both recreational and competitive skating. The curriculum follows a progressive skills model that allows participants to advance through clearly defined levels while building confidence and technical proficiency on the ice.

The summer curriculum is organized into multiple instructional tracks designed to accommodate a broad range of ages and experience levels.

Young beginners, particularly children between the ages of four and eight, begin with introductory instruction focused on balance, safe falling techniques, standing, marching, and basic movement on the ice. Adult and teen skaters ages fifteen and older are offered a separate learning environment tailored to older beginners and intermediate participants. For more experienced skaters, the Summer Skating School includes specialized advanced offerings. These classes encompass Free Skate Levels 1 through 6, jump technique instruction, and spin-development workshops ranging from Basic 5 through Gold-level training. Such classes are designed for skaters who have successfully completed foundational skills and are pursuing higher-level figure skating development.

Registration information published by the city lists most standard instructional sessions at approximately $157.50 for the ten-week program, while certain specialized ice contracts and advanced instructional offerings may reach $200.

Preparing for Opening Day

To ensure smooth operation of the summer session, the Coon Rapids Ice Center maintains several participant guidelines and instructional procedures.

Skaters are encouraged to arrive at least fifteen minutes before their scheduled class time to allow sufficient opportunity for stretching, warm-up exercises, and skate preparation. Families may use designated gathering spaces within the facility, including seating areas and party rooms located near the rinks.
