COON RAPIDS, MN (June 19, 2026) City offices and the Coon Rapids Recycling Center are closed today as the City of Coon Rapids joins communities across Minnesota and the nation in observing Juneteenth National Independence Day, the federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.

The closure affects administrative operations at City Hall and services provided through municipal offices. Residents seeking in-person assistance for permits, utility questions, licensing matters, inspections, or other city business will need to wait until regular operations resume next week.

The Coon Rapids Recycling Center, located at 1827 111th Avenue NW, is also closed for the holiday. The facility is scheduled to reopen on Saturday, June 20, at 9 a.m., returning to its regular spring and summer operating schedule. The center serves residents throughout Anoka County and accepts a wide range of recyclable materials, electronics, appliances, scrap metal, textiles, and other specialty items that cannot be handled through standard curbside collection programs.

City Hall and other municipal offices will resume normal business hours on Monday, June 22.

Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 after legislation was signed into law by President Joe Biden. The observance marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free, more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, Juneteenth is recognized as a day of reflection, education, celebration, and community engagement across the country.
