BROOKLYN PARK, MN (June 19, 2026) Organizers are making final preparations for one of the region's largest Juneteenth observances as residents from across the northwest metro prepare to gather Saturday for the City of Brooklyn Park's annual Juneteenth Celebration.

The event will take place on the campus of North Hennepin Community College, bringing together families, community organizations, local businesses, performers, vendors, and civic leaders for a day dedicated to commemorating freedom, culture, history, and community.

Juneteenth marks June 19, 1865, the day Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved African Americans that they were free, more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. The observance has grown into a nationwide celebration of African American history, resilience, achievement, and cultural heritage. In 2021, Juneteenth became an official federal holiday.
