MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Major Highway 169 Intersection Project to Close 109th Avenue in Brooklyn Park Through Early September

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (June 26, 2026) A major phase of one of northwest Hennepin County's largest roadway improvement projects will begin Monday as crews close 109th Avenue on both sides of U.S. Highway 169 for more than two months to reconstruct one of Brooklyn Park's busiest intersections.

Beginning Monday, June 29, the roadway will be fully closed east and west of Highway 169 while contractors undertake extensive intersection improvements that city officials say are designed to increase traffic capacity, improve safety and accommodate continued residential and commercial growth along the Brooklyn Park-Champlin corridor.

The closure is expected to remain in effect until Tuesday, Sept. 8, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The work represents a critical milestone in the multi-year 109th Avenue Reconstruction Project, a collaborative infrastructure initiative involving the cities of Brooklyn Park and Champlin that has been years in planning and is intended to modernize one of the region's principal east-west transportation corridors.

A Key Regional Bottleneck

This summer's construction focuses on the intersection of 109th Avenue and Highway 169, where increasing traffic volumes have created operational challenges for commuters, freight traffic and residents traveling between the two cities.

Under Brooklyn Park Capital Improvement Project 4014, crews will widen the intersection by constructing additional travel lanes, including new turn lanes intended to improve vehicle throughput and reduce congestion during peak travel periods.

The project also includes replacement of the existing traffic signal with a modernized system designed to accommodate the revised lane configuration and improve traffic operations through the intersection.

City officials have identified the improvements as an important investment in long-term mobility as development continues throughout the northwestern portion of Brooklyn Park and neighboring Champlin.

The Highway 169 corridor serves as one of the region's principal north-south transportation routes, connecting residential neighborhoods with employment centers, commercial districts and Interstate 94 to the south. Improvements to the 109th Avenue crossing are expected to enhance traffic flow while supporting future growth on both sides of the municipal boundary.

Second Summer of Construction

The current work marks the second consecutive construction season along the 109th Avenue corridor.

Earlier phases of the project reconstructed segments of the roadway between Zealand Avenue and Winnetka Avenue, including roadway improvements, utility work and expansion of portions of the corridor into a four-lane divided roadway.

This year's construction shifts attention to what transportation planners have long identified as one of the corridor's most significant bottlenecks: the Highway 169 interchange.

Because the work requires extensive excavation, pavement reconstruction, utility coordination and traffic signal installation, city officials determined that maintaining traffic through the intersection during construction would not be feasible.

Regional Detour Established

To maintain traffic movement while protecting construction crews, Brooklyn Park has established a signed regional detour.

Motorists who normally use 109th Avenue to cross Highway 169 will instead be directed along:

  • 101st Avenue
  • Jefferson Highway
  • 114th Avenue
  • Winnetka Avenue

Officials encourage drivers to anticipate additional travel time during morning and evening commute periods, as traffic volumes are expected to increase along the designated detour routes throughout the summer.

Emergency responders, transit providers, local businesses and nearby residents have been notified of the closure as construction activities begin.

Long-Term Infrastructure Investment

Planning for the broader 109th Avenue reconstruction has been underway for more than a decade as Brooklyn Park and Champlin evaluated increasing traffic demand along the corridor and identified opportunities to improve regional mobility.

According to project information released by the cities, the overall reconstruction effort is supported through a combination of local, state and regional funding sources, including approximately $10 million in state bonding funds and $2.5 million in Regional Solicitation transportation funding, with additional local investment supporting roadway and utility improvements.

The project illustrates the increasingly collaborative approach Minnesota communities are taking toward transportation infrastructure, particularly where major corridors cross municipal boundaries and serve regional traffic rather than local neighborhoods alone.

Supporting Continued Growth

Brooklyn Park continues to experience sustained residential and commercial development, particularly in its northern growth areas, placing additional demand on transportation infrastructure constructed decades earlier.

City officials have identified investments in roadway capacity, intersection modernization and traffic management as essential components of accommodating future development while maintaining efficient travel throughout the community.

Once completed, the reconstructed intersection is expected to improve traffic operations, reduce delays and provide additional capacity for motorists traveling through one of Brooklyn Park's busiest gateways.

Construction schedules remain subject to weather and field conditions. Residents and commuters are encouraged to monitor official city project updates throughout the construction period for changes to traffic patterns, lane restrictions and project timelines.
