MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Blaine Opens Junior Citizens Academy to High School Students During MEA Break

BLAINE, MN (August 16, 2026) High school students who live or attend school in Blaine can apply for a free, two-day introduction to careers in police and fire services during Minnesota’s October MEA break.

The Blaine Junior Citizens Academy will take place Thursday, October 15, and Friday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students will spend one day with the Blaine Police Department and another with the Spring Lake Park-Blaine-Mounds View Fire Department.

The program is designed to provide a supervised, behind-the-scenes look at public-safety work while giving students opportunities to interact directly with police officers, firefighters and other emergency-service professionals.

Planned activities include simulated traffic stops, search-and-rescue demonstrations, ladder operations and fire-extinguisher practice. Students will also receive a controlled introduction to how conducted-energy devices, commonly called Tasers, operate.

The academy may be particularly useful for students considering careers in law enforcement, firefighting, emergency management or related public-service fields. It also provides participants with a broader understanding of how police and fire agencies prepare for emergencies and make operational decisions.

Participation is free, but enrollment is limited to 20 students. Applicants must be enrolled in high school and either reside in Blaine or attend a school located in the city.
