The record-breaking opening weekend initially put the 2026 Fair ahead, but four softer weekdays have erased that advantage entering the final Labor Day stretch.
FALCON HEIGHTS, MN (September 5, 2026). The Minnesota State Fair's extraordinary record-setting opening has given way to a markedly different attendance picture, with the 2026 Fair now slightly behind last year's cumulative pace after Thursday produced its smallest crowd of the year.
Official attendance for Thursday, September 3 was 107,159, bringing cumulative attendance through the first eight days to 1,189,182.
The comparable eight-day attendance total in 2025 was 1,192,606.
That means the 2026 Fair, which remained 15,341 visitors ahead of last year's pace after its first seven days, has now slipped 3,424 visitors behind 2025 entering its final four days.
Thursday's crowd was also well below the 125,924 visitors recorded on the comparable eighth day last year and far below the second-Thursday daily record of 156,764, established in 2018.
The reversal illustrates just how dramatically attendance has changed since opening weekend.
The 2026 Fair began with two consecutive daily records.
Opening Thursday drew 155,185, exceeding the previous opening-day record of 138,875.
Friday followed with 204,065, surpassing the previous first-Friday record of 171,233.
Those two days alone attracted more than 359,000 people and created a large attendance advantage over 2025.
But the advantage steadily eroded.
Saturday attendance was nearly identical to last year.
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday all trailed their comparable 2025 totals.
Wednesday provided a modest rebound, drawing 117,150 compared with 114,932 last year, before Thursday's 107,159 attendance erased what remained of the cumulative lead.
The result is an unusually balanced attendance race entering Labor Day weekend.
Through eight days:
2026 attendance: 1,189,182
2025 comparable attendance: 1,192,606
Difference: 2026 trails by 3,424
That gap is small enough that Friday alone could reverse the ranking.
But the broader all-time record remains considerably more difficult.
The Minnesota State Fair's cumulative attendance record is 2,126,551, established in 2019.
To break that record, the 2026 Fair would need another 937,370 visitors across its final four days, an average of approximately 234,343 per day.
That would require an exceptionally strong closing weekend.
For comparison, the official daily records for the final Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Labor Day Monday are 225,521, 270,426, 256,015 and 184,740 respectively.
If those four individual daily records were somehow matched simultaneously, they would produce 936,702 admissions, still slightly short of the number 2026 presently needs to surpass the overall 2019 record.
That mathematical reality makes a new all-time cumulative record increasingly unlikely.
But other benchmarks remain very much in play.
The 2025 Fair drew approximately 1.94 million visitors, meaning a strong Labor Day weekend could still place 2026 among the most heavily attended fairs in Minnesota history.
Saturday's programming includes FFA Day and Pan-Latino Day, while TLC, Salt-N-Pepa and En Vogue headline the Grandstand.
Sunday and Labor Day traditionally offer additional opportunities for large crowds before the gates close Monday night.
The next crucial number will be Friday's attendance.
The State Fair says daily attendance figures are generally posted between noon and 3 p.m. the following day.
That figure will show whether the four-day closing surge began strongly enough to erase Thursday's setback.
For now, the picture is clear.
The 2026 Minnesota State Fair opened with two historic crowds.
Eight days later, that spectacular start has been almost completely neutralized by a softer weekday stretch.
The final four days will determine what kind of Fair 2026 ultimately becomes.
