MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Man Found Dead Inside Detached Garage Following North Minneapolis Fire

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (August 22, 2026) Minneapolis authorities are investigating after firefighters found a man dead inside a detached garage while extinguishing an early-morning fire Friday in north Minneapolis.

Fire crews were dispatched to the 4700 block of Colfax Avenue North following a report of flames coming from a structure.

Firefighters arrived to find a large fire burning inside a detached garage. Crews brought the flames under control before the fire could spread to nearby houses, trees or electrical lines, according to information released by the Minneapolis Fire Department.

Firefighters discovered the man while searching the garage after suppressing the fire. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Fire officials said the man was not associated with the residents of the property. His identity had not been released as of Friday, and authorities had not explained why he was inside the garage.

No other injuries were reported.

Minneapolis fire investigators, police officers, forensic scientists and representatives of the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office responded to process the scene and recover the man’s body.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The medical examiner will determine the man’s identity and official cause and manner of death.

Authorities have not announced evidence connecting the garage fire to the other death investigations reported around Minneapolis during the preceding week. Until investigators release additional findings, the circumstances of the fire and the man’s death should be treated as undetermined.
