Relatives say Bonnie Pierce returned to the burning East Side residence when she realized her toddler remained inside and was found protecting the child with her body. SAINT PAUL, MN (August 30, 2026)  A 38-year-old Saint Paul mother has died after relatives say she returned to a burning duplex and shielded her young daughter as firefighters worked to reach them.

Bonnie Pierce died Monday from injuries sustained in the August 22 fire on the 700 block of Magnolia Avenue East, according to information shared by her family through an online fundraiser.

The Saint Paul Fire Department responded at approximately 3:30 p.m. and encountered an active fire inside the duplex.

Pierce initially escaped but returned after realizing that her toddler daughter, Grace, remained inside, relatives said.

Firefighters found Pierce covering Grace with her body.

The child was hospitalized following the rescue and is expected to recover, according to the family.

Another Daughter Escaped Through a Window

One of Pierce’s other daughters escaped by removing or kicking out a window air-conditioning unit and climbing through the opening, the family said.

Pierce leaves behind four daughters and a grandson.

Family members described her actions as a final effort to protect her child under extraordinary and rapidly deteriorating conditions.

The family’s account has drawn messages of sympathy from residents and others who learned about the fire. A fundraising campaign established to assist Pierce’s children had received more than $6,600 as of Thursday.

Investigation Continues

Authorities have not publicly identified the cause of the fire.

The investigation involves the Saint Paul Fire Department and Saint Paul Police Department. Investigators typically examine the location where a fire began, possible ignition sources, electrical systems and witness accounts before determining whether a cause can be established.

No criminal allegations had been announced in connection with the fire when this report was prepared.

Residents are urged to maintain working smoke alarms on every level of a home, create escape plans and remain outside after escaping a burning building. Fire officials generally advise occupants not to reenter because smoke, heat and structural collapse can become fatal within minutes.

Pierce’s death leaves her family facing both grief and the practical consequences of the fire. The fundraiser is intended to help her daughters with funeral costs, housing needs and other expenses.
