MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Minnesota State Fair Breaks Attendance Record for Second Consecutive Day

More than 204,000 people entered the fair Friday, pushing attendance during the opening two days to 359,250 and surpassing the comparable 2024 total by nearly 50,000. 

SAINT PAUL, MN (August 30, 2026)  The Minnesota State Fair established a new attendance record for the second consecutive day Friday as 204,065 people passed through the gates during the first full weekend of the Great Minnesota Get-Together.

Friday’s crowd exceeded the previous first-Friday record of 171,233, established in 2024, by 32,832 visitors. That represents an increase of approximately 19 percent.

The record followed an opening-day attendance of 155,185 on Thursday. That count surpassed the former opening-day record of 138,875, also established in 2024, by 16,310 people.

Combined attendance for the fair’s first two days reached 359,250.

During the corresponding Thursday and Friday in 2024, attendance totaled 310,108. The 2026 count is therefore 49,142 higher, an increase of approximately 16 percent.

Strong Start to the 12-Day Fair

Friday’s attendance establishes the strongest two-day opening in the fair’s history.

The crowd arrived for Governor’s Fire Prevention Day, new foods and beverages, agricultural exhibitions, rides, shopping and performances throughout the grounds.

“Weird Al” Yankovic and Puddles Pity Party performed at the Grandstand Friday evening. Vertical Horizon, Nur-D and other artists appeared on free stages around the fairgrounds.

The record followed a busy opening day that introduced visitors to the 230-foot American Wheel, new gathering spaces and dozens of new food offerings.

Some dedicated fairgoers began lining up Wednesday morning, approximately 24 hours before the gates opened.

Weather and Calendar May Have Helped

Comfortable late-summer weather accompanied the fair’s opening days. Reporters and fair visitors also noted that Labor Day falls relatively late this year, giving families more time to attend before many school schedules resume.

Those circumstances may have contributed to the turnout, but fair officials have not attributed the records to a single factor.

Saturday morning brought periods of rain, but visitors continued arriving as the fair entered 4-H Day and Hubbard Hometown Day. Saturday’s verified attendance was not available when this report was prepared.

The State Fair publishes each day’s official attendance the following afternoon, generally between noon and 3 p.m.

Two Major Records Already Broken

The back-to-back records place the fair on a strong early trajectory, although attendance during the remaining days will depend on weather, programming and visitor turnout over Labor Day weekend.

The Minnesota State Fair reported total attendance of 1,940,869 in 2025.

The all-time fair attendance record remains 2,126,551, established in 2019.

The fair continues through Labor Day, Monday, September 7. Admission gates open daily at 7 a.m. and close at 9 p.m. The grounds remain open until 11 p.m., except on Labor Day, when the fair closes at 9 p.m.
