MINNEAPOLIMEDIA NEWS | Brooklyn Park’s Northwest Growth Plan Enters Environmental Review

The plan contemplates new housing, commercial districts, transit-oriented development and biotechnology facilities.

BROOKLYN PARK, MN (September 26, 2026). A large section of northwest Brooklyn Park could eventually accommodate new housing, commercial districts, transit-oriented neighborhoods and biotechnology facilities under a growth plan undergoing formal environmental review.

The Minnesota Environmental Quality Board has published Brooklyn Park’s draft Alternative Urban Areawide Review, commonly known as an AUAR, for land in Sections 6 and 7 of the city. The environmental study evaluates the cumulative consequences of developing an entire area rather than considering the effects of one building proposal at a time.

The development scenario includes residential and commercial construction, transit-oriented development and biotechnology facilities supporting research, offices, production and manufacturing. New roads, utilities and other public infrastructure would also be required.

The review will examine how that growth could affect traffic, wetlands, stormwater, wildlife habitat, public utilities and surrounding neighborhoods. It may also identify transportation and environmental improvements that developers would be required to fund or construct.

An AUAR does not authorize individual construction projects. However, its findings can influence future zoning decisions, infrastructure investments and development approvals across the northwest growth area.

Residents, affected property owners and public agencies have until October 8 to comment on the draft. Documents are available through the City of Brooklyn Park and at City Hall, 5200 85th Ave. N.
