Authorities have identified the man killed aboard a Green Line train Saturday as 36-year-old Joseph Denny Nezperce of South St. Paul, while transit police say surveillance cameras captured the suspected gunman and officers have increased their presence on trains and at stations.

MINNEAPOLIS, MN (October 6, 2026).

The investigation into Saturday night's fatal Green Line shooting has advanced significantly, with authorities identifying the victim and Metro Transit police saying surveillance cameras captured the suspected shooter as investigators move closer to a possible arrest.

Minneapolis police identified the man killed as 36-year-old Joseph Denny Nezperce of South St. Paul.

Nezperce was aboard an eastbound Green Line train Saturday night when he was shot as the train traveled from Stadium Village in Minneapolis toward Saint Paul.

The train stopped at Westgate Station. Metro Transit police found Nezperce suffering from gunshot wounds, and emergency personnel attempted lifesaving measures before he was pronounced dead.

Police said the suspected shooter left the train shortly after the gunfire.

No arrest had been publicly announced by Monday evening.

The most consequential new investigative development is the surveillance evidence.

Metro Transit police said cameras captured the suspect and indicated investigators believe an arrest could be approaching. Transit riders also reported seeing more police officers aboard trains and at stations following the killing.

That changes the status of the case from the initial report MinneapoliMedia published Monday morning, when authorities had disclosed a homicide and a fleeing suspect but little about whether investigators had obtained identifying evidence.

Police have not publicly disclosed the suspect's identity or announced a motive.

The shooting occurred shortly after 9 p.m. October 3 aboard one of the Twin Cities' busiest transit corridors. The Green Line connects downtown Minneapolis and downtown Saint Paul through the University of Minnesota and communities along University Avenue.

Metro Transit increased its security presence Sunday, including additional officers aboard trains and at stations. The agency said the fatality reinforced its continuing work to improve transit safety.

The case also demonstrates the investigative importance of surveillance systems on public transportation. Unlike a shooting inside a private building, a train moves between stations and jurisdictions while passengers continuously enter and exit. Video can allow investigators to reconstruct where individuals boarded, their movements inside the train and where they left.

Authorities have not disclosed whether investigators know where the suspected shooter boarded or where that person went after leaving the train.

Minneapolis police remain the lead homicide investigators.

Metro Transit advises passengers to call 911 during emergencies. Riders can also use the agency's Text for Safety system at 612-900-0411 to report suspicious or unwanted behavior directly to trained transit personnel.

Until an arrest is announced, the investigation remains open. But police now possess something they had not publicly disclosed when the homicide was first reported: images of the person they believe killed Nezperce.
