Coon Rapids Police Department Invites Locals To Insider's View With Community Police Academy Program

The Coon Rapids Police Department has thrown open its doors to the community for a seven-week in-depth educational venture dubbed the Community Police Academy.

Starting on January 16 and running through February 27, locals can embark on this journey into policing methods and practices.

The academy meets Tuesdays from 6:00-9:00 p.m., and is entirely free of charge.

This popular program requires selection, and the department will be reaching out to chosen participants, all eager to peer behind the badge, explore the machinery of justice, and walk in the shoes of those sworn to protect and serve, according to the department's official Facebook page.

K9 and DUI demonstrations will show off the specific skills officers use to keep streets safe.

Participants delve into a variety of critical topics from the decision-making crucible officers face daily, to the de-escalation prowess meant to defuse volatile situations.

High-tech tools and a snapshot of how officers handle mental health crises round out the program.

The program is designed to foster understanding, trust, and transparency between the police and the community they serve.
