Brooklyn Park Celebrates Opening Of Tessman Ridge Apartments

A new mixed-income apartment building with 75 units is now open in Brooklyn Park. Leaders say it’s filling a crucial need in the west metro.

Tessman Ridge Apartments are mostly made up of families making 50 to 60 percent of the area’s median income. There are eight units for North Hennepin students and seven are available at the market rate.

There are also some units for people with disabilities and supportive housing units with social services. The units range in size from studio to four-bedroom size apartments.

John Duffy, the president of Duffy Development and a general partner for the apartment project, attended a tour on Tuesday, Dec. 17. He said the units filled up quickly.

He said management received 435 applications while they were laying down drywall for the building. It was so fast, they had to cut off the applications at that point.

“We could’ve rented 800 or 900 of these units easily on this site, just to give you an idea of the market and the need here,” Duffy said.

The building is already 100 percent occupied, but Duffy said another building that mirrors the existing one will be built next door. That likely won’t be complete until 2026.

Duffy said Minnesota Housing, the Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County helped finance the building. The project broke ground back in July 2023.
