As the chilly embrace of winter settles all around, Anoka County Parks is calling all nature enthusiasts to venture into the frosty wilderness and to truly understand the secret lives of the area's wildlife. The Wargo Nature Center has announced a series of wildlife tracking sessions to take place on select Saturdays this season – namely January 11, February 8, February 15, and March 1 – from 10 am to 12:30 pm. According to the official announcement from Anoka County Parks, participants will have the unique opportunity to "identify tracks as well as other signs that animals leave behind."
The informative sessions are led by accredited naturalists specializing in the identification and interpretation of animal tracks and sign - a nod to their advanced certification from Tracker Certification North America, the only certifying body on the continent for such expertise. Those planning to attend are encouraged to not only explore and learn but also to purchase a tracking field guide at discounted prices, ensuring they can carry their newfound skills beyond the sessions. Individuals 14 years and older are welcome to participate, and registration is available through the Anoka County Parks website.
Lest you think tracking is the only game in town, Anoka County Parks begs to differ. A flurry of January activities ensures that nobody needs to stay cooped up at home. For the mindfulness seekers, a session of Forest Bathing is slated for January 3, while families can delight in a free storytime event aptly titled Once Upon a Story Time on January 7. Opossum aficionados – yes, they exist – can lunch with a naturalist to learn about these unique creatures on January 8. Meanwhile, the Islands of Peace Park beckons all ages for a Walk with a Naturalist on January 11.
Add to that the Saturday Nature Play — a charming way for tykes ages 2-5 to discover the "Sounds of Winter" on January 11. Creatively inclined individuals can partake in the Eco-Art Series to make a Bird Seed Feeder that same day. For those itching to glide along the snowy trails, Adaptive Cross-Country Skiing and Learn to Cross-Country Ski sessions are both available on January 22, accommodating varied ages and skill levels, and just in case you haven't had your fill of snow-based fun, Wargo Nature Center invites all to a Snow Day celebration on January 25. Each event is listed with age recommendations and pricing, encouraging residents to find the perfect way to connect with both nature and the community during the frost-kissed months.
