Anoka County Launches East River Road Corridor Study to Improve Safety and Mobility

COON RAPIDS, Minn. — Anoka County has launched a major study to evaluate safety and mobility improvements along County State Aid Highway 1 (CSAH 1), better known as East River Road. The study area spans from County State Aid Highway 14 (Main Street) in Anoka to County State Aid Highway 8 (Osborne Road) in Fridley — a vital north-south transportation corridor serving thousands of daily commuters and local residents.

According to the City of Coon Rapids, the project’s study phase will continue through the end of 2025, followed by design work in 2026 and 2027, and construction anticipated to begin in 2028. The initiative aims to ensure that the East River Road corridor remains safe, efficient, and capable of meeting the region’s growing transportation demands.

The corridor analysis will focus on four key goals:

  • Future Planning: Estimate long-term travel demand and assess whether existing intersection layouts and traffic control measures, such as signalized intersections, can continue to provide safe and efficient operations in the years ahead.
  • Recommendations: Develop detailed proposals for potential changes to intersection design, traffic control, and overall roadway configuration.
  • Financial and Logistics: Estimate the costs of proposed improvements and evaluate any potential right-of-way impacts.
  • Public Involvement: Engage community members, commuters, and business owners to gather input on current issues and possible solutions.

Anoka County officials emphasize that public engagement is central to the study process. Residents are encouraged to review the informational presentation outlining the project’s objectives and timeline, and to provide feedback on their experiences traveling along East River Road.

Community members can learn more and participate through the following resources:

Officials note that the findings from this study will help shape the design and construction phases, guiding long-term infrastructure investments to enhance safety, traffic flow, and accessibility throughout the East River Road corridor.
