Anoka County Sheriff’s Office Recruiting Volunteers for Reserve Unit; Informational Session Announced

ANOKA COUNTY, Minn. — The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office is inviting community members to learn more about its Reserve Unit, a dedicated team of volunteers and licensed liaison staff who play a vital role in supporting public safety across the county. An informational session has been announced for individuals interested in joining the unit and learning about its functions within the Sheriff’s Office Patrol Division.

The Reserve Unit assists the Sheriff’s Office in carrying out its mission to protect and serve the community. Members of the unit help with traffic and event control at local parades, carnivals, and the Anoka County Fair. They also assist licensed deputies at traffic collision scenes, aid on traffic stops, perform vehicle lockouts, handle animal control calls, and participate in recreational enforcement and public education efforts.

These volunteers—often referred to as reserve deputies—provide an invaluable service by responding to lower-level calls and routine incidents, allowing licensed deputies to focus on more urgent and complex matters. Their visible presence at community events and throughout the county also enhances public engagement and safety.

Eligibility and Commitment

No prior law enforcement experience is required to join the Reserve Unit. The Sheriff’s Office encourages all eligible community members who are interested in public service and volunteerism to attend the informational session.

Applicants must:

  • Be at least 18 years old and have completed high school.
  • Commit to volunteering a minimum of 130 hours per year.
  • Pass a comprehensive criminal background check.
  • Attend monthly meetings.

The Reserve Unit is composed of unpaid volunteers and licensed liaison staff who receive training to prepare them for their duties in community support and safety operations.

Individuals with questions or who would like more information about the informational session or the application process are encouraged to contact Sergeant Justin Nelson at justin.nelson@anokacountymn.gov.
