St. Francis Board policy defer to politicized website overriding book review committee
Against legal advice, a former Moms For Liberty member’s book rating website will now be the determining factor in which books get banned from St. Francis Area Schools Libraries. The new policy refers to BookLooks.org as the primary indicator of a book’s eligibility in the policy that dictates what books can be purchased in SFAS and allows residents to challenge books already in the library.
“This requirement raises legal concerns that could expose the District to challenges,” wrote SFAS Legal Counsel Maggie Wallner, of Kennedy & Graven. “... The proposed language would arguably violate (Minn. Statute 134.51) by supplanting the library media specialist’s professional judgment with an external rating system. As described on its website, Book Looks is managed by a group of concerned parents, and the organization does not appear to have any professional library credentials.”
