Maple Grove Senior High School students and staff are mourning the loss of a classmate who died unexpectedly after a track workout near the school, school officials confirmed Monday.
The student is identified as Espoir Missite, a 16-year-old boy who was a sprinter on the school’s track and field team, according to a fundraising post started for his family to cover medical costs and funeral expenses.
“His lively spirit and passion for science, sport and life impacted everyone he encountered, and his absence is profoundly felt by all,” read the GoFundMe post.
Organizer Alain Hambike said Missite died after “suffering cardiac arrest” on Feb. 25.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office has not yet released a cause of death.
School officials said the teen’s workout was not held during an official track practice, which is not scheduled to begin until later this month.
“Extra support is available for students and staff who need time to reflect or talk with someone,” said Kay Villella, a district spokesperson for Osseo Area Schools.
Funeral services for Missite are planned for Tuesday, March 4.
