Bloomington Residents Invited to Declutter and Donate for 31st Annual Book ’Em Sale to Benefit Crime Prevention

The Bloomington Crime Prevention Association is spearheading its 31st Annual Book ’Em sale, embarking on a mission to give books and other media a second life while also doing good for the community. The event is not just a sale; it's an invitation to residents to declutter their shelves and contribute to a sustainable cycle of reuse. Until June 5, donations of used books and other items can be dropped off, paving the way for the sale that's scheduled from June 6-11.

Donating is made convenient with multiple locations across Bloomington welcoming contributions. Community spots such as Bloomington Civic Plaza, My Credit Union, Premier Banks, alongside Normandale Village outside Snips Salon, and the Normandale Chiropractic Health Center are lending spaces for drop-offs. Walking through Normandale Village, dropping off books that once transported readers to worlds afar, they will now embark on a new journey.

The sale’s site, situated at 10779 Hampshire Ave. S., is also accepting donations. For those wanting to make use of their afternoons or a part of their weekend for a good cause, the location opens its doors on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12-5 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. As per details provided on the city's official site, the array of accepted items runs the gamut from books to puzzles to records, though they draw the line at mildewed books, outmoded encyclopedias, and any form of outdated tech like computer software, VHS, or cassette tapes.

Aiming to strike a balance between replenishing and refreshing collections, the BCPA has outlined rules about the dos and don’ts concerning donations. Besides the joy of unburdening oneself of long-forgotten volumes that have done little but gather dust, those who donate can also revel in the knowledge that their contributions support crime prevention efforts, with the detailed parameters dictating what can and cannot be donated found at the BCPA's website or by reaching out directly at board@bcpamn.org.
