ANOKA COUNTY, MN – June 11, 2025 – A Coon Rapids man has been sentenced to a prison term of nearly five years in connection with the fatal stabbing of his mother's boyfriend in May 2024. Romelle Flowers, 26, received a sentence of 4 years and 9 months after pleading guilty to second-degree manslaughter in Anoka County District Court.

The victim was identified as 40-year-old Dennard Eugene Percy, also of Coon Rapids. The incident occurred on May 1, 2024, at the Coon Rapids home where all three resided.
According to the criminal complaint, emergency services were called to the residence in the 10300 block of NW. Jay Street shortly before 3:30 a.m. on May 1. The 911 caller, Flowers' mother, reported that her son had stabbed her boyfriend. Responding officers found Percy suffering from multiple stab wounds. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Midwest Medical Examiner's Office later determined that a stab wound to Percy's right thigh, which struck a large vein, was fatal.
The mother informed police that Flowers and Percy had been arguing throughout the day, and the dispute escalated to a physical altercation where Percy reportedly punched Flowers. She had separated the two before going to bed, but was awakened by further noise, leading her to discover Percy bleeding and Flowers fleeing the house.
Flowers was arrested shortly after the incident. During questioning, he admitted to the stabbing, stating he had been drinking and watching television, and that Percy had attacked him twice. Flowers claimed he "just took it" the first time but fought back during the second confrontation. A bloodied knife was found outside the residence.
Under the terms of the plea agreement, the initial charge of second-degree murder was reduced to second-degree manslaughter. With credit for time already served in jail since his arrest, Romelle Flowers is expected to serve less than two and a half years of his sentence in prison, with the remainder to be served on supervised release.
