Brooklyn Park, MN — Authorities have confirmed that the suspect in the targeted shootings of Minnesota Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and State Senator John Hoffman has been taken into custody following an intense multi-agency manhunt across the northwestern suburbs of the Twin Cities.
The arrest brings a moment of relief to a state still reeling from what Governor Tim Walz has called “an unspeakable act of political violence.” The suspect—whose identity has not yet been officially released—was located late Sunday afternoon and apprehended without further violence. He is now in custody and awaiting formal charges.
The tragic events began early Saturday morning. Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband Mark Hortman were shot and killed at their home in Brooklyn Park. Shortly before, State Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette Hoffman were also shot multiple times at their Champlin residence. Both were rushed to the hospital, underwent emergency surgery, and remain in critical but stable condition, according to state officials.
Authorities have confirmed that the attacks appear to have been deliberate and politically motivated. The shooter reportedly impersonated a police officer, wearing tactical gear and driving a vehicle outfitted to resemble a law enforcement SUV. Officials say a manifesto and a target list were recovered during the investigation, which included the names of prominent Minnesota lawmakers.
Governor Walz ordered flags at half-staff statewide in honor of Speaker Emerita Hortman and condemned the act as “an assault not only on individuals but on the very fabric of our democracy.”
“Melissa was a leader of uncommon grace, courage, and intelligence. Her murder, and the attack on Senator Hoffman, are stark reminders of the dangers of political extremism. We must all stand united against hate,” Walz said during a Sunday press briefing.
Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson, BCA Superintendent Drew Evans, and Brooklyn Park Police Chief Mark Bruley also addressed the public, thanking law enforcement partners—including the FBI, State Patrol, and Hennepin County Sheriff's Office—for their tireless efforts over the past 36 hours.
The incident has shaken Minnesota’s political community and drawn nationwide attention. Speaker Emerita Hortman, a DFL representative from Brooklyn Park, was a respected voice in the legislature for over two decades. Her sudden loss is deeply felt across party lines.
Security for state officials has been significantly heightened. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant, especially regarding anyone impersonating law enforcement officers. Officials also reassured the public that "Minnesota remains safe and united."
The charges, and court date are expected to be announced within 24 hours. Investigators are continuing to comb through digital evidence and interview persons of interest.
