MINNEAPOLIS, MN (June 2025) — In a continued effort to reinforce leadership and community trust, the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) recently recognized the promotion of several of its officers during a ceremony held at St. Mary’s Greek Orthodox Church. The event, attended by family, friends, and colleagues, marked a significant milestone in MPD’s restructuring efforts and its pledge to advance public service through experienced leadership.
The ceremony highlighted the elevation of Deputy Chief Emily Olson, whose distinguished tenure in law enforcement and dedication to community engagement earned her the department’s second-highest rank. Olson steps into a critical leadership role at a pivotal time for the MPD, symbolizing the department’s investment in homegrown leadership talent.
Joining her in leadership ascension is Inspector James Novak, newly appointed to oversee operations at the 5th Precinct. Novak, recognized for his operational effectiveness and community outreach, brings a legacy of integrity and experience to his new command post.
MPD also celebrated the appointment of:
Each of these individuals was selected following a rigorous evaluation of their service records, leadership competencies, and dedication to public safety.
In a notable development, Chief Brian O’Hara formally introduced Ayodele Famodu as Bureau Chief of Internal Affairs. Famodu, a respected figure within the department, now leads one of MPD’s most vital accountability arms, responsible for overseeing internal investigations and ensuring departmental transparency and integrity.
“These promotions reflect years of dedication, leadership, and service to the people of Minneapolis,” the department shared in a public statement. “We are proud of each officer’s accomplishments and excited for the work ahead.”
This wave of promotions comes amid a broader period of reform and transformation for the MPD, as it works to rebuild community relationships and enhance institutional trust following years of national scrutiny. The ceremony at St. Mary’s not only honored the personal achievements of those promoted but also served as a reaffirmation of the department’s evolving mission.
In recognizing their new ranks, each officer took a step forward in MPD’s efforts to deliver ethical, community-focused policing. The event underscored the human faces behind the badge—officers committed to fairness, service, and accountability.
MPD leadership signaled that these promotions are part of a strategic effort to build a more resilient, transparent, and community-responsive police force.
The department extended its congratulations to all newly promoted officers, affirming confidence in their ability to lead during a time of both opportunity and challenge.
