EAST BETHEL, MN — June 24, 2025 — East Bethel City Council Member Suzanne Erkel has not resigned, following a turbulent council meeting Monday evening where residents voiced strong opinions both for and against her controversial Facebook comment.
Over 100 attendees packed the June 23 session, which centered on Erkel’s post referencing a warning to Democrats—suggesting dire consequences if they don’t “toe the line.” The comment raised immediate backlash in the wake of heightened political tensions after the assassination of State House Speaker Melissa Hortman.

Erkel addressed the crowd directly, reiterating that her intent was not to threaten but to respond to what she perceived as increasing hostility in political discourse. She confirmed having received personal threats and emphasized that the Sheriff's Office review found no credible threats attributed to her post.
City Administrator Matt Look expressed that while the city respects freedom of speech, any language implying violence or threats against public officials crosses a serious line. He confirmed that no formal investigation or censure is underway—Erkel remains in office for now.
The Council did not vote on disciplinary measures at the meeting. However, many residents signaled they’d return at upcoming sessions to push for official action.
