A Brooklyn Center nonprofit that helps local immigrants and refugees will soon have more space to do its work.
CAPI held a groundbreaking ceremony on Thursday to celebrate the expansion of its Immigrant Opportunity Center.
The $11.5 million project will include a community garden, a greenhouse, additional meeting spaces, a technology resource center, and an expanded food shelf.
CAPI is developing a 2-story, 16,050 sq. ft. expansion to its Immigrant Opportunity Center in Brooklyn Center. The building is located at 5950 Brooklyn Boulevard.
“We went out to [the] community, did different listening sessions, met with different community leaders asking, what do they want to see in this building, and what are the needs that they want to see CAPI fill,” said Mary Niedermeyer, CEO of CAPI. “And so, we are just excited to be here today and to be able to get going on our project.”
During the construction period, CAPI will continue services across four different locations throughout Brooklyn Center.
They hope to move into the new building in September of 2026.
