During West Metro Boil Water Advisory, Tea Shop Toughs It Out

Residents in Crystal, New Hope and Golden Valley remained under a boil water advisory on Monday.

It started Sunday after a valve in the Golden Valley water tower malfunctioned, causing a drop in water pressure.

Until the advisory is lifted, city officials recommend boiling tap water before using it for drinking, cooking or preparing food, brushing teeth or washing dishes.

There’s a possibility that the water was contaminated, but the testing process takes 16 to 18 hours.

City officials also recommended tossing out any ice that was made during the advisory.

That’s an issue for An Nguyen, the owner of Bober Tea and Coffee in Golden Valley.

The store specializes in boba tea and mochi doughnuts. But on Monday, they advertised a different sort of specialty — store-bought ice.

“I have to send my husband to nearby city to get the ice so we could continue to do the business,” Nguyen said. “But it like, increased the cost.”

The shop boils its tea, but had to empty its ice machine on Sunday and buy several bags of ice.

However, the water advisory didn’t keep customers from visiting.

“We try to explain for them if they come in so they’re confident,” Nguyen said. “If they not come in that means they’re nervous.”

She’s excited for a chance to return to in-house ice. “I hope that the water’s back up soon so we don’t have to come in to, run around to buy the ice because I think, one of the stores, I went to buy the ice. They go, ‘no more ice,'” Nguyen added.
