Coon Rapids 2025 Construction Season In Full Swing

Residents Can Expect Significant Improvements to Roads, Trails, and Neighborhood Infrastructure

Coon Rapids is in the midst of a busy and impactful 2025 construction season, with several major infrastructure projects underway across the city. From street reconstruction to trail upgrades and a new pedestrian bridge, the city and its partners are working to improve transportation access, neighborhood safety, and recreational opportunities for residents.

Street Reconstruction Project 25-1

This year’s primary street reconstruction initiative spans 3.9 miles of residential streets within three neighborhoods:

  • Oaks of Shenandoah (north of 131st Ave, between Coon Creek Blvd and Shenandoah Blvd)
  • Thousand Oaks (south of Main St and west of Olive St)
  • Thrush Park (south of Main St and generally west of Shenandoah Blvd)

Northwest Asphalt Inc. is leading the work, with full-time City Inspector Jason Huebscher available for resident concerns at 763-767-6570 (office) or 612-709-2704 (cell).

Project Updates:

  • Area 1 – Oaks of Shenandoah: Final paving has been postponed until late summer. Manhole and valve adjustments are planned for next week, along with ongoing landscaping repairs. Residents are encouraged to monitor their irrigation systems and report concerns.
  • Area 2 – Thrush Park: Work is scheduled for Saturday, July 26, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., including asphalt driveway restoration. Boulevard restorations and irrigation repairs will continue into next week.
  • Area 3 – Thousand Oaks: Utility replacements, including watermains and storm sewer catch basins, are ongoing. Watermain and service line work is expected to wrap up by the end of next week.

Pavement Mill & Overlay / Full Depth Reclamation Project 25-2

This project includes pavement rehabilitation in:

  • Oakwood Park neighborhood (north of Main St, west of University Ave)
  • Xeon Boulevard (between Xeon St and Northdale Blvd), including cul-de-sacs on Avocet Circle, Yellow Pine St, and Zilla St

Miscellaneous City Trails Project 25-3

Trail reconstruction continues through August 2025 in the following parks:

  • Sunrise Pond Park
  • Al Flynn Park
  • Rockslide Park
  • Riverview Trail (segment between Xavis St and Direct River Dr)

Coon Creek Regional Trail Pedestrian Bridge Project 24-6

A new pedestrian bridge is being built over Coon Rapids Boulevard near Zilla Street. The project, awarded to Ames Construction, is progressing with:

  • Southside abutment piers and railing installations nearly complete
  • Construction now shifting to the north side of the boulevard

Completion is anticipated by October 2025.

Coon Creek Trail and Boardwalk Project 19-21

A new asphalt trail and boardwalk from Main Street to 121st Avenue is now substantially complete and open to the public. Questions can be directed to Inspector Hafedh Hlel at 763-767-6412 (office) or 763-339-6128 (cell).

Anoka County Projects

Work is ongoing on:

  • Mill & Overlay of Northdale Boulevard and University Avenue
  • Traffic signal replacements at:
    • Northdale Blvd & 111th Ave
    • Northdale Blvd & University Ave
