St. Paul Hit By Cyberattack; National Guard Called In To Assist

ST. PAUL, MN — The City of St. Paul is reeling from a major cyberattack that has disrupted access to both internal systems and public-facing online services. In response, Governor Tim Walz has activated the Minnesota National Guard to support the city’s emergency cybersecurity operations.

According to a statement from the governor’s office, the “magnitude and complexity” of the incident have “exceeded the city’s response capacity.”

St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter confirmed the breach on Thursday, calling it a “deliberate, coordinated, digital attack, carried out by a sophisticated external actor, intentionally and criminally targeting our city’s information infrastructure.”

City officials have not yet disclosed the full extent of the impact, but emphasized that teams are working around the clock to restore services and protect sensitive data.

The deployment of the National Guard underscores the seriousness of the threat. Minnesota has one of the nation's most active and capable cyber defense units within its National Guard, which has previously assisted during statewide cyber incidents and national exercises.

Authorities have not yet confirmed who may be behind the attack or whether any data has been compromised. Federal and state agencies are expected to assist in the ongoing investigation.

This is a developing story. MinneapoliMedia will provide updates as more information becomes available.
