Motorists traveling through the Twin Cities metro area this weekend should prepare for multiple highway closures and detours as the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) continues major construction projects aimed at improving long-term safety and mobility across the region.
MnDOT officials urge drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time, and use alternate routes or public transit when possible. “These temporary closures are a necessary part of our efforts to improve safety and efficiency on our roads,” said Anne Meyer, spokesperson for MnDOT’s Metro District. “We appreciate the public’s patience as we work to modernize key corridors in the Twin Cities.”
For real-time updates, maps, and closure details, residents are encouraged to visit 511mn.org or follow @MnDOT on social media.
Several weekend events, including the Uptown Art Fair in Minneapolis and the Irish Fair of Minnesota on Harriet Island in St. Paul, are expected to draw significant crowds. Attendees are advised to use Metro Transit services, including light rail and bus routes, to avoid congestion and road closures.
Metro Transit confirmed that despite the highway disruptions, Blue Line and Green Line light rail services will operate on normal schedules, with additional bus services running for special events.
MnDOT's summer construction schedule remains active through October. Upcoming weekend closures are expected on segments of I-494 in Bloomington, I-35E in Eagan, and Highway 169 in Plymouth. Detailed advance notices will be issued weekly.
MinneapoliMedia will continue to provide timely updates on closures, detours, and construction impacts across the metro area.
