MINNEAPOLIS — A man wounded in last week’s mass shooting near the Interstate 35W and Lake Street Station has died from his injuries, authorities confirmed.
Adam John Peterson, 46, succumbed on Saturday, September 20, 2025, after being struck during the September 15 shooting at East Lake Street and Stevens Avenue South. The incident, which unfolded around 11:10 a.m., left five men injured and has become one of two mass shootings that rattled Minneapolis within a 12-hour span that day.
Police say the first shooting erupted near the Midtown Greenway and a walkway beside a highway off-ramp. Of the five victims, Peterson sustained the most serious injuries. Three others were hospitalized with survivable wounds, and a fifth man was grazed by a bullet and declined immediate medical treatment.
Investigators recovered multiple shell casings from the scene and are still piecing together conflicting accounts about whether there was more than one shooter or if shots came from a vehicle. Police believe the violence stemmed from a quarrel that escalated. As of Sunday, no arrests have been made.
Hours later, at about 10 p.m., Minneapolis police responded to a second mass shooting at a homeless encampment along the 2700 block of East Lake Street. Seven people were shot, including two who sustained head wounds.
One of the victims, Jacinda Oakgrove, 30, died on Thursday, September 18, from injuries suffered in that attack. Authorities believe the encampment shooting was tied to a narcotics dispute.
Police Chief Brian O’Hara said investigators cannot rule out a connection between the two shootings, both of which are thought to have involved more than one shooter.
The spate of violence has drawn swift action from city leaders. Mayor Jacob Frey announced that Minneapolis will partner with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to fence off the troubled walkway near the Lake Street transit stop, an area long associated with drug use and violent crime.
Separately, the city has cleared the East Lake Street encampment where the second shooting occurred, citing “urgent safety and health concerns,” despite an ongoing legal dispute with the property owner.
Both shootings remain under investigation. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward.
