COON RAPIDS, Minn. — As rain is forecast to turn to snow late Tuesday evening and continue into Wednesday morning, the City of Coon Rapids is launching a full snow‑removal operation. A Winter Weather Advisory for the Twin Cities metro area, set to expire Wednesday at noon, has prompted city crews to begin clearing major streets at 4 a.m. Wednesday.
While forecasts predict one to two inches of snow accumulation across the region, officials warn that gusty winds, falling temperatures, and icy conditions could make the morning commute hazardous.

The city’s Streets Division will follow its tiered snow‑plowing protocol, prioritizing main roads, hills, and high-volume intersections. After critical routes are cleared, crews will move to secondary streets and residential areas, including the city’s 374 cul‑de‑sacs. In total, crews maintain more than 400 lane miles.
The city uses a cornstarch-based salt mix for de-icing steep grades, curves, and high-traffic areas. This mixture is less corrosive and more environmentally friendly than traditional salt applications. Sand is not used. Full curb-to-curb plowing of residential streets occurs only after snow accumulation reaches three inches or more, or if conditions such as drifting or ice make it necessary.
Winter parking restrictions remain in effect through April 1. Residents should be aware of two key rules:
Vehicles left in violation of these rules risk being ticketed or towed. Officials urge residents to move cars into driveways or other off-street locations to allow crews to efficiently clear streets and ensure access for emergency vehicles.
By coordinating snow removal, enforcing parking restrictions, and following safety guidelines, residents help ensure streets remain clear and safe during winter storms.
