BLAINE, Minn. — As the City of Blaine continues its rapid suburban growth, the Blaine Police Department (BPD) is stepping up recruitment to expand its law enforcement ranks and ensure public safety keeps pace with the city’s evolving demographics.

Currently authorized for 77 sworn officers, Blaine PD is actively seeking new recruits to join a department that prioritizes community engagement, professional development, and specialization. The city, one of the fastest-growing suburbs in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area, surpassed 70,000 residents in the 2020 Census and is projected to reach nearly 90,000 in the coming years. Demographic data indicates the non-White population has increased from 16 percent to 23 percent over the past decade, highlighting the city’s growing diversity.

“The challenges of a rapidly growing city require not only vigilance on patrol but a genuine investment in forging strong, trusting relationships with a diverse public,” said a BPD spokesperson. “We are looking for individuals who view themselves as members of the community first, and law enforcement partners second.”

Community-Driven Policing

Blaine PD responds to more than 45,000 calls for service annually and emphasizes a community-centered model. This approach is reflected in its robust outreach programs, such as the Blaine Police Community Alliance — a collaborative forum where local leaders and residents provide feedback and help shape public safety initiatives. Other initiatives, including “Night to Unite” and “Coffee with a Cop,” allow officers to connect with residents outside of emergency situations, building mutual trust and understanding.

The department also offers immersive educational programs such as the Blaine Citizens Academy and the newly launched Junior Citizens Academy, designed to engage high-school students in public safety careers and foster civic involvement.

Opportunities for Specialization

Prospective officers can pursue roles in a variety of specialized units, including:

  • Community Assistance Team (CAT): Focused on repeat calls involving vulnerable populations, mental health crises, and housing issues, connecting residents to Anoka County social services.
  • Special Operations: Advanced units including the K-9 Unit, Drone (UAS) Unit — established in 2023 to assist in searches and public safety operations — and the Traffic/DWI Unit.
  • Investigative and School Units: Positions within the nine-member Investigations Division and the School Resource Officer (SRO) program, which places officers in local high schools and middle schools.

Training and Career Development

Blaine PD maintains a reputation for supportive, team-focused culture and rigorous training. Recruits complete a three-week in-house academy followed by a four-phase, 60-shift Field Training Officer (FTO) program, preparing them for the complex demands of suburban policing. Lateral transfers and recent graduates are encouraged to apply, with opportunities for advancement across specialty units and leadership tracks.

“Our officers are empowered to be problem-solvers, whether that means investigating a complex crime or connecting a resident in crisis with vital resources,” the spokesperson said.

Serving with Purpose

For individuals seeking a career where their work has daily impact, Blaine PD offers a professional environment grounded in integrity, respect, and collaboration. Officers are encouraged to build relationships with residents, participate in community-driven initiatives, and contribute to shaping the future of a dynamic, diverse suburb.
