Coon Rapids Passport Center temporarily closed for construction as Anoka County shifts services to Anoka
Coon Rapids, MN
The Coon Rapids Passport Center, a key access point for federal travel documents in the north metro, is temporarily closed as part of a month-long facility improvement project, according to Anoka County officials.
The closure began Thursday, January 29, 2026, and is scheduled to continue through Friday, February 27, 2026. During this period, all on site passport acceptance operations at the center, located at 455 99th Ave NW in Coon Rapids, are suspended.
County officials say the construction is intended to upgrade the facility and improve long term service capacity for residents. The closure coincides with one of the busiest travel planning windows of the year, as families across the region prepare for spring break and early summer travel.
Passport services temporarily relocated
To maintain access to passport acceptance services during construction, Anoka County has shifted operations to the Anoka County Government Center, located at 2100 Third Ave, second floor, in Anoka.
The temporary location is operating under an appointment only model. Walk in applications are not being accepted while the Coon Rapids facility is closed.
Appointments must be scheduled through Anoka County’s online booking system. County staff note that appointment availability can fluctuate due to high demand and cancellations, and residents are encouraged to check back frequently if no time slots are immediately visible.
What applicants need to know before arriving
Applicants are urged to arrive fully prepared to avoid delays or the need to reschedule. For first time passport applicants and most child applications, this includes bringing a completed but unsigned Form DS 11, filled out in black ink, along with original proof of U.S. citizenship and a valid government issued photo ID.
Payment requirements remain unchanged. Applicants must bring two separate forms of payment:
- A check or money order payable to the U.S. Department of State for the federal application fee.
- A separate payment for the Anoka County execution fee, which is $35.
Passport photo services are available at the Government Center for a $20 fee. Applicants may also bring their own passport compliant photo if they prefer.
Travel timing and regional context
The temporary closure comes as passport demand rises statewide. According to the U.S. Department of State, routine passport processing currently takes approximately four to six weeks, with expedited service averaging two to three weeks, not including mailing time. County officials are advising residents with upcoming travel to plan accordingly and submit applications as early as possible.
Other regional passport acceptance offices, including the New Brighton Passport Office, remain operational during this period, though standard federal holiday closures apply. Those offices will be closed on Presidents Day, Monday, February 16, 2026.
Reopening timeline
The Coon Rapids Passport Center is expected to complete construction by the end of February and resume normal operations on Monday, March 2, 2026.
County officials say additional updates will be shared if the construction timeline changes. For now, residents seeking passport services are encouraged to confirm appointment availability and processing timelines well in advance of any planned travel.
