COON RAPIDS, Minn. - A jury has convicted Omari Malik Shumpert, 20, of Minneapolis, on most counts in the January 2024 triple homicide that killed three members of a Coon Rapids family, closing the trial phase for the third and final defendant charged in the case.
Jurors found Shumpert guilty on 10 of 11 counts related to the killings. He was acquitted on one count of premeditated first degree murder. Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 9.
The killings occurred on Jan. 26, 2024, at a residence in the 200 block of 94th Avenue Northwest. Authorities said the case was built largely on surveillance footage from inside and outside the home, along with cellphone and other digital evidence that traced the defendants’ movements.
The victims were identified as Shannon Patricia Jungwirth, 42; her husband, Mario Alberto Trejo Estrada, 39; and her adult son, Jorge Alexander Reyes Jungwirth, 20. Two children under the age of five were inside the home at the time and were not physically harmed.
Prosecutors said the evidence showed a coordinated home invasion. According to testimony and court filings, video from inside the residence captured the confrontation and the shootings. One victim secretly called 911 and left the line open during the incident.
Investigators said three men arrived at the home in a blue Nissan. Two wore clothing resembling UPS delivery uniforms and carried a cardboard box, an apparent ruse to gain entry. The entire incident lasted about seven minutes, authorities said.
Court documents and prior reporting indicate prosecutors alleged the killings were tied to a robbery motivated by drug money. Search warrant affidavits stated that Trejo Estrada was under investigation by a violent crime task force for alleged narcotics trafficking, and investigators believed the suspects went to the home to steal cash.
Shumpert’s conviction follows two earlier guilty verdicts.
Alonzo Pierre Mingo, 39, was convicted in September and sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Prosecutors identified him as the primary gunman.
Demetrius Trenton Shumpert, 32, Omari Shumpert’s older brother, was convicted in November on multiple counts of first degree murder. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 8.
With the final verdict now returned, the case moves fully into the sentencing phase, bringing to a close one of the most disturbing criminal cases in recent Coon Rapids history.
