A winter tradition rooted in community

Snowflake Days was founded in 1964 by the Coon Rapids Jaycees, led by local resident Chuck Austin, with the goal of fostering community cohesiveness during the winter months. What began as a modest local celebration has grown into a multi week festival that draws participation from across the city.

Signature events include:

  • The Medallion Hunt, a city wide scavenger hunt that can award up to $500 to the finder who possesses the official Snowflake Days button
  • Winter sports such as the Guns and Hoses hockey game between police and fire departments, outdoor skating at Sand Creek Park, and disc golf
  • Longstanding community traditions including a parade, waffle breakfast, snow sculpture contest, and the Junior Royalty Program, which has been part of Snowflake Days since the 1970s
